As it continues expanding support for new and society-owned series, Open Book Publishers is seeing increasing needs in areas where funding is limited but scholarly impact is significant. Early-stage or newly adopted series often require intensive editorial development, community-building, and visibility work before they are stable; society-owned series can be particularly vulnerable because they typically lack commercial revenue streams and depend on volunteer labour.

To ensure these valuable publications can thrive long-term, Open Book Publishers introduces two new institutional support tiers:

TIER

USD

EUR

GBP

The Quarto190017001500
The Folio650060005000

These new tiers are designed to:

  • Provide stable funding for new and developing series;
  • Support scholarly and society-owned series during their most vulnerable stages;
  • Strengthen an equitable model so that all disciplines, not just the well-funded ones, can benefit from open access.

These tiers reinforce a model that remains fully open regardless of uptake. OBP does not rely on conditional thresholds, collective commitments, or fallback closed-access sales. Institutions' support therefore directly strengthens a publishing environment where open access is guaranteed, not conditional.

Supporting members with the interest and capacity are invited to consider joining these new tiers. Participation is entirely optional, but doing so offers a meaningful way to sustain vulnerable yet impactful scholarly communities and secure the long-term publication of these series.

However:

  • No institution is expected or required to change tiers if it is not feasible.
  • All existing tiers remain unchanged, and current level of support continues to make an essential difference.
